The Mountain Between Us is directed by Hany Abu-Assad. Abu-Assad has received two Academy Award nominations: in 2006 for his film Paradise Now, and again in 2013, at the 86th Awards, for his film Omar. The Mountain Between us is adapted from the book written by Charles Martin. This movie features Idris Alba and Kate Winslet as well some screen time with Beau Bridges and Dermot Mulroney. Two strangers, a surgeon going home for a important surgery and a photographer on the way to her own wedding crash in a single engine plane and they are left to fight the elements together along with an unnamed dog. I liked Kate Winslet and Idris Alba on screen together. I believed the friendship then the unlikely romance that developed between them. It's said that when you're in a near death situation with someone a bond forms and that's exactly what we are seeing on screen. This highly anticipated sequel is an hilarious, tongue and cheek, 2 hours 21 minutes of British and American extremes. Directed and co-produced by Matthew Vaughn, also director of Kick-Ass, X-Men First Class, Kingsman: The Secret Service, to name a few, deliver a reliably funny action spy comedy film. The movie features Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Mark Strong, Edward Holcroft and Sophie Cookson reprising their roles from the first film, with Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, Pedro Pascal, Elton John, Channing Tatum and Jeff Bridges joining the star studded cast. Julianne Moore was a terrific villain. Quirky yet utterly devious. Let's not forget the Elton John (playing himself). Wow he was so hilarious. Especially towards the end of the movie. From the trailers alone I had the impression that Channing Tatum would have played a bigger role than he did. They could have used him more. Never fear Tatum fans, it seems like they set his character up for a bigger role in the third installment should there be one. Who would have thought that music and a heist themed movie would go so well together. Imagine a crime/action movie paired with high-speed car tricks and great music. This movie was a delightful surprise. It also had moments of humor and tragedy which made for well rounded characters. Watching the trailer, I wasn't sure what I was in for. When the movie started with all this music and choreographed moves, choreographed driving, and fighting it was a surprise and I didn't see it coming. My knee jerk reaction was that it was cheesy, then suddenly without me even realizing it, I really got into it and I enjoyed it immensely.
I can hear it now...."Tamara, YOU'RE reviewing Baywatch?!?!" Yes, yes I am! The Rock...and muscles. Enough said. Well, there's more to be said. Starting with the fact that Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock is really likable in this movie. He always is. Zac Efron looked a little plastic to me for some reason, but he provided his fair portion of comedy. Together along with the rest of the Baywatch squad, they delivered the laughs. During two specific parts of the movie I was nearly in tears because I was laughing so hard.
Logan was one entertaining, sad, violent, and well done movie. My reaction while watching Logan compiled of things like "Oh, how dreadful!", "No!", Why?!" Logan takes place in the future, 2029, and Logan (Hugh Jackman), the once swoon-worthy hero that he was, is not the same as when we last saw him on screen. His looking older and he's feeling it. His healing abilities aren't what they were, he's slower, he's not as powerful, but one thing that is the same is his hard as nails and stubborn personality. Hugh Jackman really showed his acting chops this go around as Wolverine. As expected his character is bull headed, rough around the edges, with some bits of mushy bits on the inside. No matter how tough he is, he cares for others and it peeks out from underneath the emotional armor that he wears.
My ThoughtsThis movie was perfection. I don't say that lightly. I was uplifted and inspired when I walked out of that theater. While watching the movie, I could relate with some of the things happening to Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer). In 2016 women are still being taken advantage of in the work place. From equal pay to getting the correct title and pay for the work they are doing. This really hit home for me in a major way. I've been dealing with this for a white in my recent history so I could relate to her and it angered me. Once I was able to shake off my anger from those initial scenes, I was enthralled by these women.
